U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf will not retaliate against Iran for today’s Silkworm missile attack on Kuwait’s main oil export terminal, Administration officials said.

“It is not our policy. You know the rule. We protect U.S. shipping and U.S. forces (from Iranian attack),” said one of the officials, who asked not to be identified.

The Administration officials said U.S. warships and planes were not assigned to the region to respond to attacks on third parties such as today’s strike.

Pentagon officials said no U.S. ships were damaged in today’s attack and the closest American flag ship was about 10 miles from the oil facility.

“These (Silkworms) are not very accurate at all. No one can tell for sure, but this apparently was not aimed at us,” one official said.
