ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Orange and Trabuco Hills Meet Today

Orange and Trabuco Hills high schools will be looking for their first Pacific Coast League football victory when they meet today at 1 at Mission Viejo Stadium.

Receiver Jeff Dooley of Trabuco Hills (5-1, 0-1) was shut down by Woodbridge cornerback Derrick Odum last week, and the Mustangs lost their first game of the season, 23-0. Before that game, Dooley, Orange County’s third-leading receiver with 30 catches for 704 yards, averaged more than 130 yards per game.

Orange, last year’s league champion, may have a difficult time containing Dooley. Last week, Laguna Hills’ Brian Fleming--the county’s top-ranked receiver--had 9 receptions for 106 yards and 2 touchdowns against Orange (2-4, 0-1). The Panthers had a 21-13 lead over Laguna Hills at the start of the fourth quarter, but lost, 26-21, after Fleming’s touchdown late in the game.

Orange got a strong performance from fullback Paul Maund, who gained 183 yards and scored 2 touchdowns in 26 carries.

Brea-Olinda (3-3, 1-0) vs. Valencia (4-2, 0-1) at Valencia High School, 7:30 p.m.--Last year’s Orange League champion, Valencia, is trying to bounce back from last week’s 24-10 loss to Western. In the league opener, the Tigers’ offense was shut down, and running back Keef Leasure, still recovering from an ankle injury, rushed for only five yards. Brea had its best offensive outing of the season last week, scoring 27 points in the first half against Magnolia and winning, 33-0. Tailback David Stark and fullback Mike DeClark combined for 148 rushing yards.
