Macmillan Inc., the New York book publisher, said it boosted its stake in Bell & Howell to 7.7%. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Macmillan said it holds 731,700 shares, including 106,200 it purchased between Sept. 23 and Oct. 23 for prices from $47.47 to $70.77. Macmillan said previously that it might seek control of Bell & Howell.
