Metallurgist Augustus B. Kinzel, 87
Augustus B. Kinzel, scientist, administrator and trustee for some of the nation’s most prestigious universities and institutes, died Friday in La Jolla at age 87.
The founding president of the National Academy of Engineering and most recently chairman of the board of Cybertek Inc., Kinzel was an internationally known metallurgist and engineer who held honorary degrees from schools ranging from London to New York and Ontario, Canada, to Nancy, France.
His professional career started in metallurgy with General Electric in 1920 and from 1926 to 1972 he worked for Union Carbide, where he rose to the presidency in 1948.
He was president of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies from 1965 to 1967 and a consultant to both Lehman Bros. and Ebasco.
Over the years he was honored by metallurgical societies and held many of the nation’s top engineering awards.
