COLLEGE FOOTBALL : PCAA Roundup : Second-Half Rally Gives San Jose a 24-14 Victory

A 19-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mike Perez to Kenny Roberts sparked a second-half scoring drive as conference-leading San Jose State beat Utah State, 24-14, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game Saturday at Logan, Utah.

San Jose outscored Utah State, 14-0, in the second half.

Perez, ranked fifth in the nation in total yardage, completed 32 of 49 passes for 393 yards as San Jose improved its record to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in PCAA play. Utah State fell to 2-6 and 1-3.

San Jose’s Guy Liggins caught 9 passes for 156 yards.

San Jose State scored first, on a 6-yard run by tailback Kenny Jackson, who finished with 121 yards in 28 carries.

But Utah State led at halftime, 14-10, as quarterback Brent Snyder passed 14 yards to Pat Newman for a first-quarter touchdown and teamed with Kendal Smith for a 29-yard pass-play touchdown in the second quarter.

A 37-yard field goal by Sergio Olivarez in the third quarter brought San Jose to within one at 14-13. Then the Spartans took the lead in the fourth quarter on the Perez-to-Roberts touchdown, and Jackson ran for a two-point conversion.

Olivarez concluded the scoring with another 37-yard field goal.

Fresno State 45, Nevada Las Vegas 10--Dave Telford passed for 293 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs over the Rebels at Fresno.

Telford connected with wide receiver Ron Jenkins on touchdown passes of 18 and 20 yards to give Fresno State (4-4 overall, 2-2 in conference) a 24-10 halftime lead. In the third quarter he threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Williams.

Jenkins, the nation’s third-ranked receiver coming into the game, finished with 7 receptions for 113 yards. Nevada Las Vegas (2-5, 1-3) was led by Ickey Woods, who ran for 112 yards and 1 touchdown.
