FALL HIGHLIGHTS : All 3 Marmonte Teams Win in Girls Volleyball

The Marmonte League is putting up a good argument for a releaguing of the Southern Section girls volleyball divisions--or at least the 2-A.

All three Marmonte League teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2-A playoffs with convincing wins Saturday night. Thousand Oaks, the division’s top-ranked team, beat Valencia, 15-6, 15-3, 15-2. Royal, which finished second in the league and is ranked No. 2 in the 2-A, beat Arroyo, 15-5, 15-7, 15-10.

And Newbury Park, which is ranked No. 3 in the 2-A despite finishing third in the league, beat St. Lucy’s, 15-3, 15-1, 15-0.

“The hardest teams we have to play all year, including the playoffs, are in our own league,” Newbury Park Coach Joe Wortmann said.

Julie Chellevold led Thousand Oaks (17-1) with 12 kills--including five straight in the second game--and two service aces. Kristen Cleary added six blocks and six kills and Jamie Heggen had six kills and converted 65% of her hits for the Lancers.

Royal had a balanced attack in its victory over Arroyo, the top team from the Mission Valley League. Liz Miller and Chris Jones each had nine kills and Suzi Koonter had eight kills and four blocks.

Camille Mitchell had 15 kills in Newbury Park’s victory.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Agoura def. Canyon, 15-4, 15-10, 15-7--Shannon Mathew had eight kills and four blocks to lead Agoura (14-2) to the second-round 3-A Division victory at Canyon. Tristi Heuer and Dorothy Brown each had seven kills for Agoura, ranked second in the Southern Section 3-A Division.

GIRLS TENNIS

Calabasas def. Corona, 11-7--Calabasas advances to the quarterfinals of the 3-A Division playoffs behind the play of freshmen singles players Alison Paris and Natasha Pospich, who both won matches in three games. The Calabasas No. 1 doubles team of Alison Bloom and Samantha Mao also won three straight games.

Chaminade def. Lompoc, 9-9 (76-64)--Chaminade, the No. 1. team in the 2-A, won 12 more games to escape with a second-round victory. Abigail Villana and Sarah Eipe, the Eagles’ top two players, won all three of there matches to lead Chaminade.

COLLEGE SOCCER

Cal State Northridge 8, Dominguez Hills 1--Joey Kirk scored four goals to lead Cal State Northridge to the 8-1 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. title-clinching victory. Thor Lee added two goals for Northridge (16-1-1, 8-0-1 in conference), the top-ranked team in Division II.

COLLEGE CROSS-COUNTRY

Lori Zackula of Cal Lutheran timed 19:00 and Kim Fish of the Master’s finished in 19:27 at the NAIA District III Cross Country Championships at UC Santa Barbara. Both runners qualified for the national championships.

Patrick Byrne of Cal Lutheran also advanced in the men’s division with a time of 26:28.

Master’s finished third in the women’s team competition and Cal Lutheran took fourth in the men’s division.
