Ex-White House aide Michael K. Deaver has been hospitalized for the second time during his perjury trial and will undergo surgery to remove a kidney stone, his attorneys said Thursday. Court proceedings will be delayed until next week.

Deaver was readmitted to Georgetown University Hospital on Wednesday evening for a recurrence of a problem he suffered two weeks ago, defense attorney Randall Turk told U.S. District Judge Thomas Jackson as the 11th day of testimony was to begin.

Deaver, 49, declined to waive his right to be present during trial and Jackson recessed the proceedings until next Wednesday. He first confirmed the situation with Deaver’s doctors at the request of independent prosecutor Whitney North Seymour Jr., who declared he was an “alumnus of kidney stone removal.”

Deaver is accused of five counts of lying under oath about meetings and contacts with government officials on behalf of private clients.
