The number of reported AIDS cases in the world has nearly doubled in the past year with the United States recording the highest increase, the World Health Organization said on Friday.

The number of reported cases of the disease has jumped to 45,436 in the United States, a 60% increase over the 27,773 cases reported a year ago, the organization said. The number of U.S. cases rose by 679 in one week.

The acquired immunity deficiency syndrome breaks down the body’s biological defenses, usually resulting in death. It is caused by a virus transmitted by bodily fluids.
