Bomb Exploded Near Nuclear Weapons Lab

A bomb exploded early Saturday in the parking lot of a laboratory where nuclear weapons support systems are designed, destroying two cars and shattering two windows in a weapons lab 75 yards away, authorities said.

There were no injuries in the 1:30 a.m. blast in the parking lot of Sandia National Laboratory, said Alameda County Sheriff’s Deputy Lou Lozano.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the bomb, which was placed underneath a Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory employee’s car and ripped a two-foot-deep hole in the parking lot, officials said. The lot, at the far end of the Sandia property, is just across the street from Lawrence Livermore buildings.

Investigators from the FBI, the U.S. Department of Energy and the adjacent, federally funded Sandia and Livermore labs went to the scene to examine debris which was scattered as far as 400 yards away, said Livermore lab spokeswoman Sue Stephenson.

FBI Agent Bill Cohendet said it wasn’t clear what type of explosive device was used. He declined to say whether there were any suspects.

Lawrence Livermore, where nuclear weapons are designed, is managed by the University of California. Sandia is privately managed.
