Hawaii Defeats Stanford to Win Volleyball Title

Tonya (Teee) Williams made 17 kills, and Hawaii defeated Stanford in four games Saturday night to win the seventh National Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s volleyball tournament.

The championship was the third for the top-ranked Rainbow Wahines, who also took the title in 1982 and 1983. Hawaii recovered from early deficits in the first two games to record a 15-10, 15-10, 9-15, 15-1 victory at Market Square Arena.

Suzanne Eagye scored the winning points in all three games for Hawaii by blocking returns across the middle of the net.

Stanford led, 3-1, in the first game, but Hawaii scored the next five points to take the lead. The game was close until the Rainbow Wahines scored the final five points of the game, including three by Eagye.

The Cardinal led, 4-1, in the second game, but Williams scored on four kills to lead a Hawaii rally.

In the third game, Stanford led, 6-1, but Hawaii rallied to tie, 9-9, before Amy Hayes scored on three kills as the Cardinal scored the final six points of the game.

Hawaii scored the final 14 points of the final game, including two kills for Williams.
