Local News in Brief : Grant to Fix Up Old House
A $250,000 grant has been awarded to the Cultural Heritage Foundation of Southern California to help renovate a 105-year-old house at Heritage Square in Highland Park.
The grant, made by the Tom and Valley Knudsen Foundation, is intended to restore the Valley Knudsen Garden Residence, a French Mansard Victorian-style house built in 1883. The first installment of $25,000 is to be awarded today.
The two-story structure was for years the residence of cabinet maker Richard E. Shaw. It houses a museum gift shop at Heritage Square, a collection of eight Victorian-era buildings that are being restored.
Julia Hurn, the Heritage Foundation’s associate director for development, said the house was named for the late Valley Knudsen, who founded Los Angeles Beautiful, a nonprofit organization dedicated to beautification of Los Angeles.
