Local News in Brief : Fountain Valley : Council Votes Ban on Sale, Use of Fireworks

The City Council has banned fireworks sales and use, joining 16 other cities in Orange County that have passed such legislation.

Fire Chief Richard Jorgensen noted that the wood shingle roofs on many homes in the city are extreme fire hazards, especially when “we have people standing on these roofs lighting fireworks.

“With a Christmas tree you burn your house down,” Jorgensen said. “Here you have the potential to burn down the whole neighborhood.”

Fountain Valley’s ordinance would allow public fireworks displays in supervised areas such as Mile Square Park, a traditional site for Fourth of July celebrations, if organizers obtain a permit.

Councilmen Fred Voss and George Scott dissented in the 3-2 vote.

Last June, the Orange County Grand Jury urged county supervisors and city mayors to regulate so-called “safe and sane” fireworks because of injuries and property damage that have resulted from their use.
