Steffi Graf made a big impression on Australian Janine Thompson Thursday as the 18-year-old West German needed only 40 minutes to win their match in the $1.9-million Australian Open.

Graf, top-seeded and No. 1 in the world rankings, displayed relentless power in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Thompson, who is ranked 105th in the world.

“Steffi hits the ball as hard as anyone I’ve ever played,” Thompson said after her brief appearance on center court.
