Dave Brown, Fountain Valley High School coach, stood outside the Edison gym Friday night, trying to pinpoint just why his Barons beat the Chargers, 69-63.

Jon Borchert, Edison’s coach, stood a few paces away trying to answer the same questions.

There appeared to be a number of possible answers, but none stood out.

Certainly Kevin Anderson, the Baron center, played a large role in helping to beat the Chargers. Anderson, who is 6-feet 5-inches, but weighs 160 pounds, used a smooth-looking turnaround jump shot to score many of his 22 points.

Tom Weaver, Fountain Valley point guard, ran the Barons’ offense flawlessly and scored 17 points.

Jim Borgquist added 13 points for Fountain Valley (13-2, 3-0). Edison is 11-7, 1-2.

Fountain Valley broke open a close game at the end of the first quarter with a 7-0 run. Though Edison closed the gap to three points several times, the Chargers never could take the lead.

“It was really a three- or four-point game,” Brown said. “Weaver made some tough shots. Basically, we played good defense.”

Said Borchert: “They (Fountain Valley) must just be better than us. We have got to figure something out for the next time we play them. I don’t think there were any adjustments we could have made.”

Center Mike Hunter led the Chargers with 22 points. Mike Foster came off of the bench to add 15.

Marina 49, Westminster 46--David Yamate’s three-point basket with five seconds left gave host Marina the victory. Eric Kutas of Westminster made two free throws to tie the score, 46-46, with 12 seconds left. In the teams’ first meeting, in the Orange Tournament earlier this month, Kutas made a three-pointer with 1:03 left to beat the Vikings.

Yamate scored a team-high 21 points for Marina (11-5, 1-2). Chris Tower had 23 points for the Lions.
