Ben Johnson of Canada began 1988 the way he ended 1987--with an excellent time.

Johnson, who broke the world record for 100 meters when he finished in 9.83 seconds at Rome in the World Championships last August, set a world indoor best for the 50-yard dash in his first race of the year Friday at the Hamilton Spectator Indoor Games.

Johnson’s time was 5.20 seconds, bettering Stanley Floyd’s time of 5.22 set in 1982 in Los Angeles. Finishing second was Brian Cooper in 5.25.

Billy Olson won the pole vault at 18 feet 4 1/2 inches, and Canadian Milt Ottey won the high jump at 7-5 3/8.
