Foreign investment in Mexico soared nearly 57% last year, according to a Mexican government report. Foreign companies invested $3.8 billion in Mexican factories, real estate, equipment and other assets, up from $2.4 billion in 1986. Most of the money has gone into manufacturing. The United States accounts for $13.4 billion of the foreign capital invested in its southern neighbor, which is 64.3% of the total. West Germany ranks second, with $1.5 billion, or 7%; Japan follows with $1.3 billion, or 6.4%.
