Junior center Mitchell Butler, who averages 35.5 points a game, got into early foul trouble and was restricted to 13 points and 8 rebounds, but Oakwood hung on to defeat Holy Martyrs, 43-36, in a Liberty League game Friday night at Holy Martyrs.
The Gorillas (14-1, 5-0 in league play) never led by more than four points until the final 20 seconds when they converted 3 of 4 free throws to seal the win.
After missing a free throw in the first minute of the second quarter, Butler was whistled for his third foul and did not return until the start of the second half.
The Armens (10-5, 4-1), led by Armen Abrahamian’s eight third-quarter points, took a 30-29 lead after three periods. Abrahamian finished with 14 points, 14 rebounds, 8 steals and 2 blocked shots.
But Holy Martyrs failed to score a field goal in the final quarter as Oakwood remained unbeaten in league play.
Oakwood’s Eric Leddel scored 12 points and had 6 assists, and teammate David Fond added 10 points and 9 rebounds.
