Bob Johnson of El Toro High School will coach the South team and Carl Sweet of El Dorado and Pat Mahoney of Villa Park will coach the North team in the 29th Orange County All-Star football game July 8 in Orange Coast College’s LeBard Stadium.

Johnson has led El Toro to two consecutive Southern Conference championships and was named the county’s coach of the year in 1986 when the Chargers were 14-0. He coached the South team in 1982 when the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

Johnson is expected to have his son, Bret, at quarterback for the South. Bret was recently named the state’s player of the year by Cal-Hi Sports of Sacramento.

“Part of the attraction of coaching in the game again was one last chance to work with Bret,” Johnson said. “Bret has attended the game since he was a little kid.”

Both Sweet and Mahoney have played in the series. Sweet was a defensive back representing Brea-Olinda in the 1967 game, and Mahoney was an offensive guard representing Anaheim in the 1969 game.

Sweet led the Golden Hawks to a 6-3-1 record in his fourth season at El Dorado. Mahoney was 8-4 last fall in his fourth season at Villa Park. Sweet said he also plans to use Mark McMahon of Orange on his staff.
