Obituaries : E. Davenport, 82; Golden Gate Engineer
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. — Edwin Price Davenport, one of the last surviving members of the engineering team that supervised construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, died last week at the age of 82.
Davenport was supervisor of construction of two bridge towers and the deck of the 8,450-foot-long bridge. He narrowly escaped death twice during the project that began in 1933 and was completed in 1937.
Davenport received a certificate of merit from President Harry S. Truman for his work in raising U.S. warships sunk by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
