James Linen, Former Publisher of Time Magazine

James Linen, 75, who rose to publisher of Time magazine and president of Time Inc. in a career that spanned four decades with the publishing company. He began his career as an office boy at Time and at age 28 had become advertising manager for Life magazine, part of the Time Inc. empire. In 1945 he was named publisher of Time magazine, a position he held until 1960. He later served as the parent corporation’s president and as chairman of the executive committee during a period in which the company branched out into textbook publishing, educational systems and films. After leaving Time Inc. at age 65 due to paralysis from a stroke, Linen founded an international consulting firm that specialized in bringing together heads of state and world business leaders.
