A team of U.S. officials flew to Vietnam to interview about 1,000 Amerasians and their relatives who hope to settle in the United States, a U.S. Embassy spokesman said in Bangkok, Thailand. The six-member team will remain in Vietnam until Feb. 15, conducting standard interviews required for immigration, spokesman Ross Petzing said. Last month, two U.S. congressmen who visited Hanoi said Vietnam had agreed to a two-year airlift of about 30,000 Amerasians and their relatives to the United States. But Petzing said Hanoi has not yet agreed to meet with U.S. officials to complete that accord.
