The Nation : Foot of Snow Snarls Travel in Northeast

A fast-moving winter storm roared into the Northeast, bringing a foot of snow, shutting down schools and making travel treacherous. At least two fatal traffic accidents were blamed on the icy conditions. Vermonters woke up to find as much as 10 inches of new snow on the ground, with accumulations topping a foot in higher elevations. Snow fell throughout New England at the rate of up to 2 inches per hour. Meanwhile, a fresh blast of Arctic air from Canada chilled the six-state region with wind-chill temperatures in the 70-below range. The snow forced officials at Boston’s Logan International Airport to close all but one runway for takeoffs while incoming flights were diverted. Schools were forced to close throughout the region, as well as in New York state, Pennsylvania and Ohio. In Upstate New York, more than 9 inches fell in Albany while 12 inches buried Niskayuna. Nearly a foot of new snow also was on the ground in northwest Pennsylvania.
