Ferry Crews Defying Union, Stay on Strike
LONDON — Striking British ferry crews defied their union’s back-to-work order Friday and disrupted sea travel to the Continent and Ireland for the fourth day, and 32,500 auto workers at the Ford Motor Co. set a strike for midnight Sunday.
About 5,000 ferry workers remained on strike despite an order the previous day from National Union of Seamen officials to return to work.
The strike halted nearly all of Britain’s active ferry fleet, about 50 vessels, and disrupted freight and passenger service at major ports.
The union issued the back-to-work order after appearing in Britain’s High Court where the two main ferry companies--P & O and Sealink--were seeking to enforce an injunction outlawing the strike.
The walkout began Tuesday.
