The outspoken chief of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s space station program is retiring from the agency after 30 years of service to pursue a career in private industry, sources said. Andrew J. Stofan was named associate administrator for the space station in June, 1986, and is credited with breathing new life into the program by implementing major management improvements. Sources said his retirement was expected to be announced today in Washington. Stofan had publicly been critical of White House leadership for the space station program.
