NHL Roundup : Nieuwendyk Gets 41st Goal; Flames Win, 3-2
Rookie Joe Nieuwendyk scored a tie-breaking goal in the second period to help the Calgary Flames beat the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2, Friday night in a game between division leaders at Philadelphia.
Nieuwendyk, who leads National Hockey League rookies with 41 goals, scored his league-leading 26th power-play goal when he poked a rebound of Brett Hull’s shot past Flyer goalie Ron Hextall with 4:04 remaining in the second period. The goal gave the Flames a 2-1 lead.
Calgary, which leads the Smythe Division, added an insurance goal when Mike Bullard stole the puck from Flyer defenseman Brad Marsh and lifted it past Hextall at 10:35 of the third period.
Philadelphia, leading the Patrick Division, closed to 3-2 when Peter Zezel scored a power-play goal, beating Flame goalie Mike Vernon between the pads at 16:31. Brian Propp got his 400th career assist on the goal.
Washington 6, New York Islanders 2--Dave Christian scored two goals, and Michal Pivonka had a goal and two assists to lead the Capitals past the Islanders at Landover, Md.
The Capitals overcame a 2-0 deficit to record their first victory over the Islanders at the Capital Centre after five consecutive losses, including the final three Patrick Division semifinal playoff games last year, and snap a six-game overall losing streak to the Islanders.
Detroit 4, New Jersey 3--Gerard Gallant scored two of his three goals in the third period at Detroit, and the Red Wings won their fourth straight game.
The victory extended Detroit’s unbeaten streak to six.
Boston 7, Edmonton 4--Lyndon Byers, Bob Sweeney and Geoff Courtnall all scored within an 86-second span of the third period as the Bruins won at Edmonton, Canada.
The loss left the Oilers five points back of the Calgary Flames in the Smythe Division. The Bruins, who rallied from a 3-1 deficit, are one point behind the Flames and three ahead of Montreal in the Adams Division.
Chicago 4, St. Louis 3--Rick Vaive scored on a rebound of a slap shot by Denis Savard at 1:38 of overtime to give the Blackhawks a victory over the Blues at Chicago.
Savard had a goal and three assists for the Blackhawks, who snapped an 0-4-3 skid. The loss was the Blues’ second straight after winning seven in a row.
Winnipeg 7, Buffalo 5--Paul MacLean’s second goal of the game at 5:08 of the third period snapped a 4-4 tie and sparked the Jets to a victory over the Sabres at Winnipeg, Canada.
The win left Winnipeg in third place in the Smythe Division with 57 points, 10 ahead of the fourth-place Kings.
