“Johnny Ace Memorial Album.” MCA. Ace (real name John Alexander Jr.) was the fastest-rising R&B; singer in the country in 1954 when, at 24, he shot himself to death during a backstage game of Russian roulette at a Christmas Eve concert in Houston. This 12-song budget collection ($9.99 generally) has six of his R&B; hits, including the memorable, posthumous ballad, “Pledging My Love.” While he still seemed to be searching for his style (the singing here ranges from a gruff blues shading to almost straightforward pop), Ace exhibited a youthful earnestness and desire that perfectly tailored him for the emerging teen rock crowd. *** 1/2
