Local News in Brief : Cover-Up on News Racks
Much less than an eyeful should be displayed in news racks for sexually explicit newspapers in La Canada Flintridge after April 1 when a new ordinance requiring “blinders” to block the lower two-thirds of the front pages takes effect.
Violation of the ordinance approved Tuesday by the City Council could result in a penalty of $1,000 or up to six months in jail.
One distributor, Freddy Franco, who supplies about 30 news racks on Foothill Boulevard, may mount a legal battle against the ordinance as a violation of the First Amendment, according to his attorney, Don Cook.
“I think it’s a content-based regulation,” said Cook. “I don’t think there will be much dispute.”
