South African police backed by troops fired tear gas at blacks protesting the eviction of rent strikers in Soweto, residents and activists in the township near Johannesburg said. Witnesses said some youths were beaten with leather whips. About three-quarters of the residents of Soweto have refused to pay rent since June, 1986, to protest the national state of emergency and what they regard as inadequate public services. The rent boycott has spread to 54 other black townships involving 4 million people.
