Cotton planting should increase 16% this year in the United States to 12 million acres, but overall yield should be smaller than last year’s record total, according to Kevin McDermott, vice president for economic research at Calcot Ltd., the nation’s largest cotton marketing cooperative. He said the estimate is based on changes in the government’s subsidy program permitting farmers to plant more land with cotton this year.
