Community College Women’s Basketball : Cypress Tops Moorpark, 63-55

All five starters scored in double figures as Cypress College defeated Moorpark, 63-55, in the first round of the Southern California regional community college women’s basketball playoffs at Moorpark Tuesday.

Karen Caires and Becky Wayland each scored 14 points, Vicky Silva added 12, Venetta Dorlis 11 and Janene Allen 10 for Cypress (24-7). Allen and Caires had 8 rebounds and Silva 7.

Cypress, the Orange Empire Conference champion, had lost to Moorpark (21-11) three times earlier this season. It was the 11th consecutive victory for Cypress, which plays at Golden West Friday. The winner advances to the state tournament.

In another Southern California Regional playoff game:

Golden West 89, Grossmont 52--Kris Takayama scored 14 points and Jeannie Battaglia and Kathy Werth 13 each for host Golden West. The Rustlers, the top-seeded team in the regional, opened a 43-24 halftime lead and led by 20 for most of the second half. Golden West is 30-2, and Grossmont ends its season at 13-13.
