Bowl Game Agreement Completed
The football champion of the Western Athletic Conference will play in the Holiday Bowl through 1992 under terms of a new contract between the conference and the bowl, it was announced Tuesday.
The announcement, at a news conference at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium, confirmed details of the agreement that had been reported early last month. The contract replaced an earlier agreement that would have allowed the bowl to invite two at-large teams to this year’s game Dec. 30 at Jack Murphy Stadium.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Jim Martinez’s two-run inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie as UC San Diego defeated Point Loma Nazarene College, 5-2, at UCSD.
Dave Adamson (1-0) gave up 5 hits and 2 runs in 7 innings for USD (5-1). Larry Johnson (0-3) was the loser for Point Loma (0-9).
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Despite 19 points and a game-high 7 assists from Mark Kraatz, Christian Heritage (14-13) lost an NAIA Division III game to Biola, 84-72. Biola (26-3) extended its home winning streak to 30 games.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Jessica Haynes scored 25 points and had 12 rebounds to lead San Diego State to an 86-61 nonconference victory over Oral Roberts (12-12) at Peterson Gym. Chana Perry added 16 points and 16 rebounds and Allison Smith had 16 points for the Aztecs (19-7), who led, 37-34, at halftime.
California Baptist opened the second half with a 19-3 run and beat visiting Point Loma Nazarene, 85-61, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. Ruth Rush scored a team-high 17 for Cal Baptist (23-4, 13-0). Ann Duffy had 14 for Point Loma (19-10, 6-5).
SOFTBALL
Arizona, the third-ranked team in the nation, swept a doubleheader from United States International University, 5-0 and 3-1, at Tucson. Arizona (11-1) had three singles in the sixth inning of the second game to break a 1-1 tie.
Karen Winkler (3-3) lost both games for USIU (4-6). Kelli Winkler was 4 for 6 on the day with two doubles for USIU.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
The match between San Diego State and the University of San Diego hinged on the final set, and Aztecs Kristin Hill and Sandra Mitchell teamed to win it and give host SDSU a 5-4 nonconference victory.
Mitchell and Hill beat Jennifer Larking and Aby Brayton, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 1 doubles match. Earlier, Larking beat Hill in No. 1 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. In the No. 2 match, Mitchell beat Aby Brayton, 6-1, 6-3. USD’s Tonya Fuller won the No. 3 match against Dorey Brandt, 7-6, 7-6.
BOXING
Orlin Norris of San Diego, the North American Boxing Federation heavyweight champion, knocked out Woody Clark, of Fayetteville, N.C., in the first round of a scheduled 10-round bout at the Reseda Country Club.
Norris, 16-1 with nine knockouts, is scheduled to defend his title against Reynaldo Snipes March 19 in Las Vegas, Nev.
