Four Area Wrestlers Reach State Finals
Four Valley-area wrestlers qualified for the state wrestling championships in the Southern Section Masters meet on Saturday at Fountain Valley High.
None of the qualifiers from the Valley-area won an individual title, but the top six wrestlers in each division advanced to the state meet March 4-5 at the University of Pacific in Stockton.
Rio Mesa’s Rob Cook finished second in the 129-pound class after losing to Anaheim Canyon’s Brett Schultz, 10-1, in the final. Rio Mesa teammates Lupe Beltran and Tony Flores also qualified. Beltran finished fifth in the 101-pound division after defeating Greg White of Torrance, 15-4, and Flores placed sixth after being pinned by Brian Tomazic of El Dorado.
Ali Sabbaghi of Westlake qualified in the 141-pound division, defeating Neil Truax of Arroyo, 5-2, for fifth place.
