College Roundup : Stanford Defeats UC Irvine With Strong Singles Showing
Stanford, ranked No. 1 in the nation, got strong performances from its singles players to hold off UC Irvine, 6-3, Sunday in a nonconference tennis match at Palo Alto.
Stanford’s Jeff Tarango, ranked 19th in the nation, lost his first set, then came back to defeat Mark Kaplan, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. Pat McEnroe then defeated Irvine’s Trevor Kronbmann , as Stanford (9-1) won five of six singles matches.
Irvine’s only victory in singles was by Rich Lubner, who defeated Martin Blackmon, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6. It was Blackmon’s first loss in dual competition this season. Lubner is 12-5 on the season.
In doubles play, Kronbmann and Mike Briggs defeated McEnroe and Blackmon, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Irvine (7-3), ranked 10th in the nation, also got a doubles victory from Kaplan and Lubner, who defeated Tarango and David Wheaton, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. Kaplan and Lubner are 5-1 on the season.
Weber State 5, Chapman 4--Chapman and Weber State were tied, 3-3, after the singles, but Chapman managed just one doubles victory in the consolation final of a tournament in Las Vegas.
Chapman (5-5) finished 10th in the 15-team. Miles Walker, defeated Lindsay Rawstorne, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. Olivier Amerlinck defeated Bradley Ferreira, 6-2 6-4. And Allen Juinio defeated Thomas Strahle 6-3 7-6. Walker and Amerlinck were the only doubles team to win for Chapman.
In track and field:
Christ College Irvine 55, The Master’s 48--Seth Cannon won the 200 and 400 meters to lead host Christ College. Cannon also led the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams to victory. In the women’s meet, The Master’s defeated Christ College, 54-32.
