Tennis Roundup : Jay Berger Has His Moment to Remember, Beats Wilander

Jay Berger has had his moments, but none quite like Wednesday.

Berger continued a string of upsets in the $415,000 Du Pont tennis tournament, surprising top-seeded Mats Wilander of Sweden, 6-0, 7-5, in a wind-swept match at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

“You can’t get too much bigger than beating the No. 2 player in the world,” said Berger, ranked 70th. “For Mats to get excited about every singles match he has to play is very tough for him, while if I won, it would definitely be the biggest match of my life.”

Berger took the first seven games and held on to win when Wilander came at him in the second set.

Earlier, No. 5 Andres Gomez of Ecuador lost to Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

In other matches, Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia downed Tomas Smid, also of Czechoslovakia, 6-2, 7-6; Martin Jaite of Argentina rallied to beat Luiz Mattar of Brazil, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2; Andre Agassi trounced Ramesh Krishnan of India, 6-3, 6-1; David Pate, who upset third-seeded Jimmy Connors Tuesday, cruised past Marian Vajda of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 6-4; and Aaron Krickstein eliminated Dan Cassidy, 7-5, 6-3. Cassidy had ousted seventh-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden.

Fourth-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina breezed past Wendy Turnbull of Australia, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round of the $300,000 Virginia Slims women’s tournament at Boca Raton, Fla.

In other matches, Sandra Cecchini of Italy defeated Akiko Kijimuta of Japan, 7-5, 6-2, and Mary Joe Fernandez, ranked 22nd, eliminated Michelle Torres of Northfield, Ill., 6-1, 6-2.
