Women’s Roundup : CS Long Beach Wins, 94-78

Cal State Long Beach was extended for a half before turning its semifinal game against San Diego State into a 94-78 blowout in the PCAA women’s basketball tournament Friday afternoon at the Forum.

Top-seeded Long Beach, ranked No. 8 nationally, fell behind by five points early in the first half before it came back to take a 44-36 halftime lead. The 49ers took command in the second half as the Aztecs went more than 3 1/2 minutes without scoring.

Long Beach (24-5) was led by Penny Toler with 19 points. Traci Waites had 18 points, followed by Angie Lee with 16, Shameil Coleman with 13 and Cheryl Dowell with 11. For San Diego State, which finished 21-10, Chana Perry scored 27 points.

In today’s championship game at 11 a.m., the 49ers meet No. 2 Nevada Las Vegas, which advanced after fighting off a late rally by No. 3 Cal State Fullerton to win, 61-55, in the opening semifinal game. The Rebels (24-6) had built a 17-point lead with 14:35 remaining before the Titans began their comeback.
