Prep Softball : Carpenter Is Perfect, Strikes Out 16 in Edison’s Victory

Terry Carpenter pitched a perfect game and had 16 strikeouts as Edison High School defeated Sunny Hills, 2-0, in a nonleague softball game at Edison on Tuesday.

It was Carpenter’s third no-hitter of the season, and she did not allow a ball to be hit out of the infield.

El Toro 9, Foothill 1--Paige Lauby pitched a no-hitter and hit a home run to lead El Toro at Foothill.

Capistrano Valley 5, Santa Ana Valley 0--Freshman pitcher Jennifer Smith (4-0) pitched her second no-hitter and struck out 16 to lead Capistrano Valley (4-0) over Santa Ana Valley at Capistrano Valley.

Laguna Beach 5, Newport Harbor 4--Susan Gunderson hit a home run down the third-base line in the top of the seventh to break a 4-4 tie.

Brea-Olinda 12, Katella 2--Kelly Cook had 16 strikeouts and allowed only two hits to lead Brea-Olinda (4-2) over Katella at Brea-Olinda.

Liberty Christian 13, Pioneer Baptist 1--Kim Engstrom (1-0) threw a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts for Liberty Christian (3-2) over Pioneer Baptist at TeWinkle Park in Costa Mesa.

La Quinta 1, Fountain Valley 0 (11 innings)--Chemaine Ramirez threw a one-hitter through 10 innings before Bobbi Cloyd came on in relief in the 11th inning to get the win for La Quinta (3-1).

Canyon 11, Huntington Beach 2--Canyon (6-0) scored seven runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Krissy Kyriazes, and Vicki Lewis doubled and homered at Canyon.

Villa Park 5, Orange 3--Villa Park (2-4) came from a run behind in the sixth when Gina Gonzales singled in one run and Anne Salzman singled in two more at Villa Park.

Irvine 2-1, Mater Dei 1-3--In the first game, Irvine (1-2) scored in the bottom of the seventh when Brandi Armstrong scored on a passed ball to give Jennifer Brundage (1-1) the win. In the second game, Mater Dei (3-2) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, two on Brundage’s bases-loaded wild pitch, to come from behind and defeat Irvine.
