College Spring Sports : Valley Collects 16 Hits, Walks Over L. A. City

Valley amassed 16 hits and 11 walks en route to a 19-2 victory over Los Angeles City College in a Southern California Conference game Tuesday at Valley. The game was called after 8 innings because of darkness.

The Monarchs (7-9, 4-0 in conference) had the bases loaded in every inning but the first and stole 6 bases in the first 3 innings as they took a 12-0 lead.

Jason Peterson had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, and scored 2 runs. Chris Gonzales added 3 hits and scored 3 runs and Sean Thompson also had 3 hits.

CS Northridge 3, Chapman 2--Lenn Gilmore scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch in the top of the ninth inning to give Northridge a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. victory at Chapman.

The Matadors’ Leo Ramirez (2-4) pitched a 4-hitter, struck out 7 and allowed 4 walks. Rob Scott hit a 2-run home run in the fourth inning that gave Northridge (9-18, 1-1 in conference play) a 2-1 lead.

Pierce 16, Moorpark 11--The Brahmas scored 11 runs in the first inning on their way to a Western State Conference victory at Pierce.

Paul Plyler doubled and singled in the first for Pierce (8-5, 2-3 overall), which sent 16 batters to the plate in the inning.

Jim Doushgounian was 4 for 5 with 3 RBIs for Pierce and Plyler added 3 RBIs. Corey Aurand was 6 for 6, including a 2-run home run, and added 3 RBIs for Moorpark.

College of the Canyons 4, Santa Monica 2--Jeff Flesher singled in 2 runs with 1 out in the top of the ninth inning to lead Canyons to a Western State Conference victory at Santa Monica.

Tim Nedin (5-0) picked up the win for the Cougars.

The Master’s 11, Cambelsville 5--Jeff Holen’s run-scoring triple keyed a 6-run first inning for the Mustangs. Master’s was out-hit 13-6, but took advantage of 8 walks by Cambelsville starter Mike Pollack. Dave Black (2-1) earned the win for Master’s.

The Master’s 4, Sterling, Pa. 3--Master’s scored all its runs in the fifth inning as pool-play continued at the Christian College tournament in Cocoa Beach, Fla. Tim Cain’s 2-run double was the key hit in the inning. Eric Peterson allowed 5 hits over 5 innings to pick up the win for the Mustangs. He received strong relief help from David Mayr, who recorded his second save.

SOFTBALL

CS Northridge 5, Cal Lutheran 0--Delanee Anderson pitched a 2-hitter as the Lady Matadors rolled to their ninth consecutive victory in a nonconference game at Cal Lutheran.

Anderson (3-4) struck out 6 batters and walked 1 while pitching her fourth complete game of the season.

Kim Bernstein’s bases-loaded, 2-out single gave Northridge the only runs it needed in the first inning. Two runs scored on the base hit and 2 others came home on Cal Lutheran throwing errors that followed.

Janine Cochran was 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and scored a run for Northridge (12-8), the defending NCAA Division II champion. Cal Lutheran is 11-6.

Leslie Stevens, Cal Lutheran’s leading hitter, singled along with Rosa Jimenez. DeeAndra Pilkington (3-3) pitched a complete game, striking out 1 and walking 3. She committed 3 of the Regals’ 5 errors.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pierce 9, Bakersfield 0--Bill Kearsley, Sang Kim and Mauricio Quiroga led the Brahmas to their 35th consecutive Western State Conference victory at Pierce.

Kearsley defeated Scott Howry, 6-1, 7-5, in the No. 1 singles match; Kim defeated Mike Yeomans, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 2 singles match; and Quiroga defeated Crider, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 3 match.

Kearsley and Quiroga defeated Howry and Yeomans in the No. 1 doubles match.

Pierce (8-0, 7-0) has won 132 of 133 conference matches since 1976.
