Planners OK Addition to Commercial Project

Los Angeles County planners Wednesday voted to allow another 200,000 feet of commercial development as part of a 520-acre office-residential project under construction south of the Ventura Freeway west of the San Fernando Valley.

The Regional Planning Commission unanimously approved a zone change, from residential to industrial, to permit the additional development on a 10-acre parcel near Lost Hills Road.

The change was requested by the Currey Riach Co., which already has received county approval for a million square feet of commercial development and for construction of 1,200 homes on the 520-acre site. Also planned is construction of a sheriff’s station.

Norman Buehring, representing the Las Virgenes Homeowners Federation and the Saratoga Hills Community Assn., spoke against the zone change, saying the parcel sits at the “gateway to two residential areas,” which makes it “out of sync” with the overall area plan.

“I wonder why we go through all this work to set up a total plan and then, piece by piece, change it around,” he said.

However, Tom Riach, president of the development firm, said the 10-acre site is near a proposed heliport that is part of the sheriff’s station, making it unsuitable for homes.

The zone change requires Board of Supervisors’ approval. Buehring said he does not plan to fight the project further.
