‘A Case of Political Excess’

In your editorial of March 6, you called our attention to “A Case of Political Excess” in which you pointed out the power of campaign contributions. A special bill was introduced by state Assemblyman Dennis Brown (R-Signal Hill) to help a developer (not in his district) force the school district in Placentia to return more than $300,000 in fees paid for more school buildings.

The developer paid these fees under protest and enlisted the help of state Sen. John Seymour (R-Anaheim), Assemblyman John Lewis (R-Orange) and an aide to Sen. William Campbell (R-Hacienda Heights) to put through this bill which is especially keyed only to this developer.

Until we correct the abuses of uncontrolled campaign contributions whether on the local, state or federal level, this type of abuse will continue.

Large contributions do buy influence. It’s up to us--the average citizen--to insist that this abuse be corrected. I am writing my state assemblyman, state senator, U.S. senators and congressman to pass the bills now holed up. We, the majority, should have the voice.
