Civilian Airplanes and Military Fields
Re “Crowding, Costs Send Private Flying Into Tailspin” (March 13): The idea of studies leading to a new airport in Los Angeles or Orange counties is fantasy. But it is also deliberate political subterfuge to address what are regional aviation problems with very short-sighted city council resolutions.
The best and perhaps only way to relieve the general aviation contribution to overcrowding at John Wayne Airport is to provide a realistic alternative--access to another existing site in the area. There are only three sites: Los Alamitos, El Toro and Tustin.
Los Alamitos is the easiest and best choice because of its location, size, and low use. Statements that the Pentagon would veto joint use are wrong.
Vastly more important facilities have perfectly acceptable joint-use arrangements. Albuquerque (Kirtland Air Force Base) and Yuma (Yuma Marine Corps Air Station) are just two examples. Our regional public officials should start working together on real solutions instead of playing political games.
