Iraq has begun using new, larger missiles against Tehran to increase destructive power and raise the terror factor in Iran’s capital, Western military officials said. The officials, who have received no confirmation from Iran, believe Iraq is using two Soviet-made missiles: the medium-range SS-12, which is capable of carrying a 2,000-pound explosive warhead, and a version of the Styx, which has been adapted for launching from Iraqi aircraft. Western analysts say that about 122 missiles have hit Tehran since the so-called war of the cities resumed last month, with estimates of the death toll ranging from 1,000 to 2,000. Meanwhile, Iranian gunboats rocketed an Indian tanker in the Persian Gulf, setting its engine room ablaze and injuring one crewman, shipping officials reported.
