Thome Paces Cypress to 11-3 Win Over Taft
Bobby Thome had two hits and three runs batted in as Cypress College defeated Taft, 11-3, Wednesday in the first round of the Alan Hancock baseball tournament at Alan Hancock College.
Cypress led, 2-0, after six innings, then scored seven runs in the seventh. Thome hit a three-run homer in the inning.
Tim Churchill went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, and Rod deYoung went 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs for Cypress (19-5).
Ben Gonzalez threw seven shutout innings, striking out seven, for the victory.
Cypress plays Cuesta today at 10:30 a.m. in the second round of the round-robin tournament.
