Bad Billings
I am shocked at the comments made by promoter Larry Vallon (Pop Eye, by Patrick Goldstein, March 27).
His assessment that concertgoers don’t care who performs in a “reunited” band proves how out of touch with the public he is and may explain why the Universal Amphitheatre (which he books) just finished its most dismal season.
He claims that no one complained when Van Halen toured without David Lee Roth! Vallon seems to have forgotten that Diamond Dave’s exit was intensely reported. No one buying a ticket for that event was expecting to see Roth.
In 1981, Beach Boy Mike Love performed solo at the Country Club in Reseda and was billed correctly. Had Vallon had a hand in it, knowing that 99% of the show would be Beach Boys material, it would have been billed “The Beach Boys.”
