Spring Sports : High Rollers From Hart Win Big in Las Vegas
The numbers just keep rolling for the Hart High baseball team. So do the wins.
The Indians captured the Eldorado tournament championship with a 12-0 win over Cedar City (Utah) on Saturday in Las Vegas. The margin of victory gave Hart (13-0) a composite 55-8 run total against four opponents in the tournament. The Indians’ 14 hits Saturday gave them 59 in the tournament, an average of nearly 15 a game.
The numbers also won Hart, ranked No. 2 in the Valley by The Times, some fans in Las Vegas.
“We got several comments on what a good ballclub we have,” Coach Bud Murray said.
Casey Burrill (2-0) pitched a complete-game shutout for the Indians in only his second appearance of the year on the mound. He struck out nine and walked two while allowing just four hits.
“Casey was throwing really hard,” Murray said. “He was also throwing his breaking pitch pretty well.”
Hart’s bats continued to explode, led by third baseman Dave Toledo, who had two hits--including a double--and three runs batted in. Outfielder Chris Vasquez also had a double and three RBIs.
About the only trouble Hart had came in the Vegas casinos.
“The kids played a little poker and did a little gambling,” Murray chuckled. “But I think they got kicked out a few times.”
But Murray and Hart came home happy.
“We got a real nice trophy,” Murray said. “It was real big. It must have been three feet tall.”
