Syria has advised the United States that it is tired of its military role in Lebanon and is looking for a political settlement, a senior U.S. official said in Jerusalem. Syrian leaders said they are trying to devise a new constitution and reforms that would be acceptable to all of the warring Muslim and Christian factions in Lebanon, the official said. He added that the Syrians are hoping to produce an acceptable constitution by May, when the Lebanese Parliament dissolves, so orderly elections can be held this summer. Syrian leaders believe that Lebanon has been a drain on them, the U.S. official said, and they are looking for a quick settlement.
