Roundup : Smith Is Perfect as Garden Grove Rolls Over Rancho Alamitos, 11-0
Stephanie Smith pitched a perfect game and had nine strikeouts to lead Garden Grove High School to an 11-0 victory over visiting Rancho Alamitos in a Garden Grove League softball game that was called after five innings because of a 10-run mercy rule.
Smith, a sophomore right-hander, is 5-5 for Garden Grove (8-8, 3-0). Gina DiMercurio had three hits, including a triple, and three RBIs. Taina Antolin and Brandie Novack had two hits each for Garden Grove.
In another Garden Grove League softball game:
Kennedy 8, Los Amigos 0--Cheryl Longeway (9-2) pitched a 2-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead Kennedy (9-4, 3-0) at Los Amigos. Dianna Mays had an RBI triple and scored two runs for Kennedy.
In Olympic League softball play:
Valley Christian 10, Capistrano Valley Christian 0 (6 innings, mercy rule)--Catherine Burke (3-2) pitched a two-hitter for visiting Valley Christian (1-2 in league). Lucinda Brewer had four hits.
In nonleague softball games:
Valencia 6, Troy 0--Michele Granger threw her sixth no-hitter of the season and had 18 strikeouts for host Valencia (11-3). Valencia made an error in the sixth inning to prevent it from being a perfect game. Dena Oborn had two hits and two RBIs for Valencia.
Capistrano Valley 7, Orange 1--Freshman Jennifer Smith (12-3) threw a 3-hitter with 12 strikeouts for host Capistrano Valley (12-3). Lisa Larusso had two hits, scored a run and drove in another for Capistrano Valley. Orange is 4-6.
Fountain Valley 4, Sunny Hills 1--Janet Mayahara (4-0) pitched a three-hitter for host Fountain Valley (13-3). Amy Kuckowicz and Kami Bigler each had a single and an RBI for Fountain Valley. Sunny Hills is 4-12.
Huntington Beach 3, Trabuco Hills 0--Pam Fogg (7-6) threw a two-hitter and had an RBI to lead host Huntington Beach (7-6). The Oilers scored two runs in the third inning. Angie Luzio reached first on a dropped third strike and was sacrificed to second by Fogg. Heather McTavish reached on an error and stole second. Jennifer Martin hit a sacrifice fly to score Luzio and McTavish scored on a throwing error. Shannon Kreipl singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Fogg in the fifth inning.
El Toro 1, Magnolia 0--Jenny Jourdan (5-1) pitched a no-hitter, struck out four and singled in Karie Yoshioka in the sixth inning for the winning run at El Toro. El Toro is 13-4.
Brea-Olinda 14, Glenn 0--Junior Kelly Cook (8-2) pitched a no-hitter, her second of the season, and struck out six for the victory at Glenn. Bonnie Dumas had five RBIs, including a three-run homer in the first inning. Tricia Barr went 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs to help the Wildcats (9-2).
Anaheim 8, Katella 6--Sophomore Lacie Mounger (3-3) threw a four-hitter and gave up two earned runs to lead Anaheim at home. Monica Geary was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and a double for Anaheim (3-3).
In Orange League golf:
Valencia 191, Garden Grove 196--Valencia (10-0, 2-0) won its 29th straight dual match by defeating Garden Grove (8-2, 2-1) at Willowick Golf Course Tuesday. Valencia was led by sophomore Chris Tidland, who shot an even-par 35.
Brea-Olinda 209, Western 215--Jeff Banks shot a one-over-par 36 to lead Brea-Olinda (6-0, 2-0) at Dad Miller Golf Course in Anaheim.
In Sunset League golf:
Edison 205, Ocean View 209--Edison’s Jeff Nichols and Ocean View’s Vivian Overturf both shot 38 (two over par) at Mile Square park.
In Sunset League girls’ swimming:
Marina 125, Ocean View 37--Trisha Braun of Marina (5-1, 2-0) won the 100-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke and teammate Anne Simmons won the 200 freestyle and 50 freestyle. Marina’s Kristi Boehm met the Southern Section 4-A preliminary meet qualifying time of 2:19 by winning the 200 individual medley in 2:18.65.
Edison 100, Westminster 54--Leslie Cross swam a 1:11.62 to win the 100-yard backstroke for host Edison (1-1 in league meets). Lisa Hatfield won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.77 for Westminster.
In Sea View League volleyball:
Newport Harbor 3, Corona del Mar 0--Mike Curci had 14 kills to lead host Newport Harbor to a 15-10, 15-13, 15-12 sweep.
University 3, Foothill 0--Senior setter Jay Kim led host University (4-0, 1-0) to a 15-12, 15-4, 15-9 victory over Foothill. University was also led by Pat Ferrell and Sang Lee, with seven kills apiece.
In South Coast League volleyball:
El Toro 3, Capistrano Valley 0--Brian Cleugh had 19 digs to lead host El Toro (2-4, 1-0) to a 15-11, 15-11, 15-3 sweep.
Dana Hills 3, Irvine 1--The Dolphins, who were led by Mark Leyman’s 17 kills, defeated host Irvine, 15-6, 13-15, 15-10, 15-6.
