Local News in Brief : City Sued Over Child Care
A group of parents and child care providers are suing the City of Burbank, contending its regulation of day care centers is arbitrary, inconsistent with state law and adds to the lack of child care.
The Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit filed by Public Counsel, a public interest law firm, and two private lawyers complains that Burbank permits a maximum of 10 children in a child care provider’s home, contrasted with the 12 children permitted by the state.
The state requires cities to develop standards in four areas of day care--spacing day care centers so they are not all lumped in one area, traffic, parking and noise--but Burbank has no comprehensive ordinance setting day care standards, said Abby Leibman, a lawyer for Public Counsel.
