Holiday Traffic Kills 208 in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — The National Road Safety Council said Wednesday that 208 people were killed and 550 seriously injured on South African roads as hundreds of thousands trekked home from a prolonged Easter holiday.
Measured by miles traveled per year, South Africa has one of the highest road death rates in the world. Easter is traditionally a dangerous period, with families driving long distances for a final beach break before the onset of the Southern Hemisphere’s winter.
