Shultz to Meet With 2 East Bloc Officials
WASHINGTON — Secretary of State George P. Shultz, who is cautiously expanding contacts with some of Moscow’s staunchest allies, will hold talks with the highest-ranking East German and Bulgarian officials to visit Washington, officials said Wednesday.
Hermann Axen, a member of the ruling East German Politburo, will meet with Shultz on May 3 during a three-day visit to Washington.
Although Axen holds no office in the East German government, he is the top international affairs officer of the Communist Socialist Unity Party, which controls government policy.
Andrey K. Lukanov, Bulgarian minister for foreign economic development, will meet with Shultz during an April 25-26 visit to Washington. Lukanov, a former deputy premier whose post was created in a recent government reorganization, will be the first Bulgarian Cabinet minister to visit Washington since World War II.
