A Libyan defector told a Washington press conference that Libya’s Foreign Ministry helped hatch a string of plots to destabilize moderate governments and assassinate opponents, including the Egyptian and French presidents. Salem A. Saity, who said he had worked in the Foreign Ministry in Libya and for his country’s mission to the United Nations, said he had seen orders from Tripoli to Libyan embassies abroad to carry out assassination attempts. Saity spoke at a news conference organized by an opposition group seeking to topple Col. Moammar Kadafi. Libya accused the United States of recruiting Saity to discredit Kadafi.
